History:
Paper Kite Press began with Jennifer’s design business, and our love for words. In 1995 Jennifer purchased her best friend’s design business, “Wordpainting.” It wasn’t a big design business: imagine one Apple computer, a desk, a library of clip art and fonts and several local clients needing business cards and brochures. In 2003, we discussed the idea of starting a special imprint for poetry, and the prospect of doing some workshops and events in our community. We decided on Paper Kite Press as the name because the image of a paper kite is used in a poem as a metaphor for the heart taking flight. It sounds a little maudlin as we explain it here—it was one of those great ideas we had over pie and coffee! We still love the sound of the name—and that it alludes to flight, and that amazing liftoff feeling you get when you are flying a kite—like anything is possible.
We started out with a manuscript titled “Part of a Geography,” by Jack McGuigan. A couple of years ago we started renting some studio space for community readings and events. The first studio was in an old mansion in Wilkes-Barre, and now we’ve moved into a new storefront space in Kingston.
Every third Friday we hold an open mic with a featured poet, and we host other workshops and events on a regular basis. While the community event aspect is always part of our goal, it isn’t our primary focus. We want to publish more poetry—anthologies, and individual manuscripts—so poets can get out in the world and share their work. We believe it’s important for the world to have more poetry in it—and for people to recognize that there IS poetry in the world.
